Designed for artists and printmakers looking to hone their craft or gain hands-on experience with the full silkscreen printmaking process, this private master class offers an immersive day with Alabama artist and Standard Deluxe founder Scott Peek.

The day begins with a tour exploring the grounds of Standard Deluxe. Discover the stories, creative projects, and curious details that make this place so magical and iconic. We’ll stroll through the grounds and learn about the local materials and collected objects that have been preserved, repurposed, and given new life at Standard Deluxe.

We’ll also visit Standard Deluxe’s most distinctive spaces, including the vibrant poster gallery, which features prints from Standard Deluxe’s 35-year archive; the Feed Shak—Lake Martin’s oldest fishing lodge, repurposed as an outdoor wood-fired kitchen that welcomes guest chefs; the outdoor stage, which is the centerpiece for music events such as the Old 280 Boogie; and the Little House listening room—a one-room house turned musical haven that has hosted hundreds of artists over the years.

From there, Scott will take you through the complete silkscreen printmaking process, from preparing a design and burning the screen to mixing ink, printing, and drying the finished work. Participants will have the opportunity to bring a design of their own or work with Scott to develop a design for printing. Standard Deluxe designs and screens will be on hand to also incorporate into the creative process.

Throughout the day, Scott will share his knowledge of what works—and what doesn’t—when creating a successful print design. You’ll get hands-on experience printing on a variety of pieces, such as posters, T -shirts, bags, and other materials, with plenty of opportunity for questions, feedback, and conversation along the way.

The day concludes with time to sit down with Scott, reflect on the process, and talk through questions about printmaking, creative practice, or whatever came up during the day. Participants will take home a variety of printed pieces created that day in the Standard Deluxe print shop.

The class can be adapted for youth and adults and is available for individuals or groups of up to 4 people. Other group sizes may be accommodated by inquiry. Share your desired date and number of people to inquire about a custom master class.

Scott will have a discussion with participants in advance to understand goals for the master class. Depending on interests, possibilities might include incorporating a participant’s own design into the printing process, bringing an item to print on (such as a T-shirt, bag, or textile), or exploring other creative options.
