SEE THE POSTER

...Emerging from the post-punk Americana scene in the late eighties Blue Mountain came roarin' up out of Oxford Mississippi with a sound that practically defined Alt-Country as a genre in American Music. Band members Cary Hudson (guitar), Laurie Stirratt (bass) and Frank Coutch (drums) create beautiful music that consumes listeners with all the passion and grace of the American South. Honest and straightforward, Blue Mountain's scope of musical output has been critically linked to Neil Young and Crazy Horse, the Allman Brothers, Elvis, Tammy Wynette, Robert Johnson, and Alex Chilton among many others. Touring and recording for over a decade, the band called it quits in 2001 only to be re-born better than ever this past year (2007); Standard Deluxe is proud to host this exciting and important band. We hope you all can make it...you don't want hear about this show second-hand!

Sunny Boy King to play at this years Old 280 Boogie
April 21st, 2007 10 to 4:30pm Waverly Alabama
FREE to the Public

Sunny King   born 1930s in rural Lowndes county Alabama. He grew up in B'ham. He is a self-taught bluesman learning tricks of the trade on the road in Alabama, and in Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland where he lived and played clubs at house parties from around 1957 into the 1970s. In 1976 he moved back to Alabama and now lives in Lowndes County. Sunny still performs in the Selma and Uniontown areas.
He is always in demand because he plays blues the way they should be played. Sunny has never made any personal recordings until recently but has backed up other musicians in the past. He is truly a one-man band as he sits behind his drum set with his harmonica and guitar. He is a self-made man doing what he likes the best, and that is blues.

October 2006
This Month, 15 years ago, Scott Peek, Ed and Greg Siegfried moved to Waverly Alabama and started Standard Deluxe. Wilbur High (see photo) and his wife Sue welcomed the boys and let them set up shop in the deserted Mayberry Bonded Cotton Warehouse (originally built by Sue’s Dad in the 1930’s). Scott made a homeplace of W.M. Mayberry’s General Store in the early 1990’s. In 2001 Standard Deluxe expanded by renovating the old mule-drawn logging company building (next to the post office) and named it “High Corner Co-Op” in honor of the High’s. The Co-Op serves as our on-site retail store providing original Standard Deluxe designs, as well as local and regional arts and crafts. In late 2001 ‘Ol Scotty finally got a wife and in Summer ‘02 they moved into a house a block up the street. His old bachelor pad is now a dedicated Studio (and sometimes hideout).

We want to thank Mr. High and the High Family for Everything. We’d like to invite You All to come on over and See Us sometime. You are part of the Family too.

September 2006
Well, if you missed the SweetTooth Reception and Haints show on the 9th, you missed a dang good time. We rocked late into the evening and ate enough of Pappa D's Ribs to stock 5 freezers. Tom Schaefer's dazzling artwork was well received and left folks gasping for air. Check out some the art here, and buy some while its hot and fresh from the oven. Prices are available upon request.

Here's an early heads-up: The 35th Annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts is set for October 21-22 and quickly approaching. This is a nationally-recognized show featuring over 300 artists, musicians, and performers ranging in style from folk to contemporary and traditional. As always the 2-day event will be held at Kentuck Park in Northport, Alabama. Standard Deluxe is the official screen-printer for this year's festival, designing and printing an assortment of T-Shirts, Hand-bills, and Posters for the upcoming event. If you're attending this year, be sure to purchase an Extra-Fine T-Shirt or Poster and tell'um you heard about it here. And keep your eye out for the Standard Deluxe booth, You'll know it when you see it. Click here to purchase tickets for Kentuck.

On August 29th a special exhibition of The Hurricane Poster Project, a collaborative effort of more than 150 designers and poster makers from around the globe to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief, opened at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge, LA. To date the project has raised more than $40,000 with proceeds going to the American Red Cross and other relief organizations. To find out more about the exhibit Click Here or call 225.342.0500.

August 2006
HOT enough for ya? If your anything like us, you've probably already sweated thru your T-Shirt collection. No problem, friend. Check up on that New Arrivals page in the store and feast your sun-dazed eyes on "Have a Lovely Day" a new series of T-shirts and posters by former SD intern, now Japanese resident, Blair Warner. We're sure you'll enjoy these Eastern-inspired treats, designs as quirky as there creator. Pick up a poster or two and some light, comfy T-Shirts to carry you thru the rest of the summer.

On September 1st and 2nd Standard Deluxe will proudly be judging The Hotpressed Poster Fest, a two-day poster show and contest at the Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, SC. The show features a panel discussion, awards, live music, beer, and naturally, cool posters. If you're in the neck be sure to stop by.

While I got you: On September 9th, Standard Deluxe will be hosting an opening reception at the High-Corner Co-Op for "Retroconsumerism I: Sweet Tooth", part one of an on-going series of paintings and art from our good friend, Thomas Arthur Schaefer. Meet the artist here. Also on the bill that day, are the musical stylings of the Pine Hill Haints and other special musical guests. And as usual, we'll have T-shirts, Posters and Fine Goods on Sale, and all the wild country fun you've come to expect from a trip to Waverly, Alabama. Times and details to be announced next month, so be sure to check back with us.

July 2006
We're pleased to announce the winners of the HOW Conference 2006 T-Shirt Give-a-way! If you dropped your business card off at our booth, check for your name here.

Standard Deluxe will be featured in an upcoming Poster/Print Exhibition at the Kentuck Gallery in downtown Northport, Alabama. (home to the famous Kentuck Festival of the Arts Show in October) The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of August. A reception will be held in conjunction with Art Night, August 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. Art Night is the first Thursday of each month and celebrates the opening of all gallery events in downtown Northport. Kentuck studio artists also host their Open Studios for visitors to see works in progress, meet the artists and see the actual workspaces where the artists apply materials, design, technique and equipment to the creative process. Kentuck is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call the Kentuck Art Center at (205)758-1257 or visit www.kentuck.org.

June 2006
The time is nigh for the 2006 HOW Design Conference in sunny Las Vegas, June 12-15. Once again, Standard Deluxe is the official screen printer for the conference, printing 3,800 give-away tees for attendees and an assortment of signs that are going to get you to your sessions on time. Make it a point to drop by the SD booth and say hello. We'll have plenty of sample tees and posters available for purchase. If you're going to leave Vegas with nothing but the shirt on your back, make sure its a good one.

New Arrivals are up this month, featuring the quirky stylings of design collective Dumpster Funk. This is a fresh new series, sure to get a look where ever you go.

We also want to give you a heads up about Flatstock Chicago, the 2nd Flatstock this year, featuring posters from around the country and the anxious folks that make them. Flatstock Chicago will be happening in conjunction with The Pitchfork Music Festival, July 29th & 30th in Chicago. We'll be there with posters to sell and the coolest T-shirts in town.

May 2006
A few months back, we were pleased to collaborate with Project Alabama, the Florence, Alabama-based clothing company, on a series of one-of-a-kind shirts. The pieces were painstakingly screen-printed by hand (with water-based ink) then altered and tailored by Project Alabama's regional stitching collective. Check out some of our favorites from the series below.
1.   2.   3.   4.

If you've been living in a cave and haven't heard of Project Alabama, be sure to check out their cool website and see what all the fuss is about.

The 2006 HOW Design Conference in Las Vegas is just around the corner and once again, Standard Deluxe will be in the mix, offering our own extra-fine t-shirts and posters; nice alternatives to all those paper samples you'll be taking home. Be sure to stop by our booth and say you read about it here.

Also, keep an eye on the Store's New Arrivals page for an ultra-hip collection of new T-Shirts by our friends at Dumpster Funk. Keep your pants on, it's coming soon.

April 2006
Well the clocks been tickin' and it's finally that time; The 6th Annual Old 280 Boogie is just around the corner THIS Saturday April 22nd in beautiful, downtown Waverly, Alabama. This is our yearly celebration of Highway 280 bypassing our now much quieter, small town. This year's "Boogie" will feature Live performances from regional and national musicians, arts and crafts, fine country-cookin', games, contest, and mule buggy rides, to boot. Live Music starts early this year at 10 am on the lawn next to the High-Corner Co-Op with performances by:

To coincide with the day's events, Standard Deluxe will be showing off a collection of our hand-printed posters at the High-Corner Co-Op in celebration of our 15th year in business. The High-Corner Co-Op is our t-shirt and variety store in downtown Waverly. The collection includes posters from our last 5 years and some that have never before been available (Did I mention they're for sale?) The posters will be showing all May, just in case you cant' make it to the Boogie.
Hope to see you soon!

March 2006
March 06 Spring is finally creepin' up and we're stretching our legs. If you're in Austin for the South by Southwest Music Convention SXSW (March 16-18) be sure to swing by the Standard Deluxe booth at the Austin Convention Center to meet the boys and load up on samples. Mention you read about it here and we'll slip you some goods from the Friends stack. Standard Deluxe will also be exhibiting at FlatStock 8, the annual poster show brought to you by The American Poster Institute. FlatStock is held at the same time as SXSW; downstairs in the Austin Convention Center. We'll be right along-side the best poster-makers in the country with posters and art prints ready to be rolled up and carried home.

While your browsing around, go over and check out waverlyalabama.com for updates on this year's 6th Annual Old 280 Boogie. We've got a partial listing of performers up and a complete listing of this year's menu options. The fun starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 22nd. Bring the wife and kids, leave Fido at home. More news coming next month. Talk to ya'll then.

Check back in next month for a complete listing of musicians performing at this year's Boogie.

Lastly, I'm sure you've been enjoying the Waverly Dog Slide Show to your left. These photos were taken by our good buddy and continuing SD contributer Dave Stueber at the High-Corner Co-Op. Shulbok is the game we've been enjoying on the porch of the High Corner Co-Op for a while now. It's a Dutch table game, a cross between air hockey and skee ball and endless hours of fun for the family or the fellers. Local folks will remember Shulbok as a staple of the old Amsterdam Cafe in Auburn. A Shulbok kit comes with a 17"x6' maple playing board hand-crafted in Alabama, and a box of 36 wooden discs. Click here and here to check out the game in action. Email deluxe@standarddeluxe.com to find out how to get your very own Shulbok set.

Whew -- Sorry to gnaw your ear off. It's been a good year in Waverly and great year for us at SD. Here's hoping ya'll have a safe and warm holiday season, and that your New Year will be a blessed one. Thanks for choosing Standard Deluxe.

Still wondering how you can contribute to the hurricane relief effort? The NAACP has launched a Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate assistance to the worst affected victims and to ensure the equitable distribution of money and resources from Federal, state and local government. By donating to the NAACP you can ensure that your dollars make it into the hands of those who need it most. Click here to make a donation thru the NAACP.

Also in need at this time is the Louisiana SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). This is a private non-profit organization that is not receiving FEMA assistance. These good folks have made it there priority to rescue and house pets and animals displaced from this disaster. If you can provide fostering or adoption for an animal victim, email the SPCA at info@la-spca.org or click here to make a donation to the Louisiana SPCA.

Helping the less-fortunate should be a year-round concern. Unfortunately, it takes tragedies like this to remind us of the millions in need around the world. The One Campaign is an unprecedented effort by Americans to fight the onslaught of AIDS and extreme poverty, worldwide. This is a diverse coalition of faith-based and anti-poverty organizers who have dedicated themselves to raising awareness of these issues and can use all the help they can get. Click here to learn more about the One Campaign and find out how you can help.

Finally, we'd like to tell you about our good friend and continuing SD contributor, Dave Stueber. Dave is a talented photographer that we've had the good fortune to know for years. He is a resident of New Orleans and braved the storm and its week-long aftermath from his partially submerged home in the Garden District. We're happy to report Dave is now safe and sound in Alabama. Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to Dave at this time. Click here to see some samples of Dave's exceptional photography.

HOW Design Conference in Chicago
Continuing our relationship with HOW Magazine, We were pleased to exhibit at this year's conference in Chicago. Our Tees and Promos were a big hit and we made a few new friends along the way. See some photos of our trip.

Bird Machine
While in Chicago we paid a visit to The Bird Machine, Jay Ryan's super-cool silkscreen poster shop. Jay was good enough to give us a tour of his facilities and tip us off to the hot spots around the windy city. Check out these photos of Jay doin' his thing.

French Paper Co.
Our tour of the great North continued as we made our way to Niles, Michigan, home of French Paper and the coolest man in the biz, Jerry French. Mr. Jerry (now 60lbs. lighter) was waiting out on the front steps when we pulled up to the mill and graciously gave us a tour of French's incredible facilities. We were on hand to witness the fabrication of a pink coverstock which we saw go from pulp to sheet. If you're a paper geek like we are, the French Paper Mill is your temple. See some photos from our tour.

April 2005
This year saw the return of Waverly's newest institution, The 5th Annual Old 280 Boogie, celebrating Highway 280's bypassing of our now, much quieter town. Every year "the Boogie" brings an eclectic mix of music, food, art, activities, and people together and this year was no exception. Musical Performers included The Pine Hill Haints, Ras Alan, The Pot Luck Drum Choir, and many others. Also special at this year's Boogie was the High-Corner Co-Op's exhibition of the work of Alabama Folk Artist Buddy Snipe and the Waverly debut of Alabama Bluesman Robert Thomas.

March 2005
Coming off his 2004 Grammy win for Best Reggae Album, Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals fame began his 2005 True Love Tour. Standard Deluxe was proud to be involved by producing a series of t-shirts to be sold on tour, continuing a relationship with Toots that started in 1997.

Sep. 2004
We teamed up with BBDO Detroit to design and print 2 posters for ChryslerMotors to be displayed at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. One poster was for their new sedan, the 300, the other for the sleek new Crossfire - both rendered in a "folk art" style in keeping with the H.O.B.'s theme. Both posters will be featured in the 2005 Communication Arts Illustration Annual.

Aug. 2004
Southern Rockers, The Drive-By Truckers asked us to produce a poster commemorating their latest outing, The Dirty South Tour. Based on the water-color art of Wes Freed, this 5 color poster was a labor intensive project but well worth the time. The poster art went on to be used for the cover of the Dirty South Tour DVD.

June 2004
Once again, Standard Deluxe exhibits at the HOW Design Con. This year the conference was held in San Diego. A good time was had by all. Click here to see our booth and Art Chantry's back.

May 2004
The good folks from Lightroom Studios came by to check out our operation and hang out for a while. Kevin Byrd scoured the area taking photographs of our space and our "sleepy" hometown. Click here to take his photo-tour of Standard Deluxe.

April 2004
Feeling the cramped confines of a small office in a 100 year old cotton warehouse, the art department moved next door into a spacious 100 year old store-front, recently renovated by the SD crew. In addition to office space, the new "Studio" provided an ideal spot for Standard Deluxe's expanding flat-printing services.

March 2004
Standard Deluxe was proud to exhibit, for the third time at the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX, bringing home the coveted award for Best Booth. We made alot of new friends, one of which, Paul Grushkin, was there to promote his then forthcoming book, "The Art of Modern Rock". Scott got to meet and talk awhile with Mr. Grushkin about show posters and the screen-print revolution.

Dec. 2003
Released in 2003, David Carson's TREK (Gingko Press) detailed his recent travels and work. Check out pages 130-131 to for a nice little spread about Scott Peek and Standard Deluxe.

Nov. 2003
We teamed up with Charles S. Anderson Design to produce a limited series of 53 prints on Charles' collection of vintage wallpaper for an art exhibit. Two members of the CSA crew, Sheraton and Jovaney made the journey from Minnesota to Alabama and worked hands-on with us to produce what became an exciting collection of prints. We enjoyed hosting Sheraton and Jovaney for the week and sent those boys back up north with a finer appreciation for BBQ ribs and dirt roads.

Continuing our collaboration with Tinwood Media, Standard Deluxe printed the first run of "HouseTop" variation, a beautiful quilt from Gee's Bend resident Mary Lee Bendolph. Mrs. Bendolph was on hand for the printing and signed a limited number of copies. After trying to "tidy up" a bit around the shop she spent the rest of the afternoon swinging and chatting on our front porch.

July 2003
Matt Lane Harris joins the Standard Deluxe team as full-time production and graphic artist.

Nov. 2002 - May. 2003
The Waverly Music Hall was a short-lived but highly appreciated addition to Waverly, bringing a wide variety of musical performers to the area for a successful run of shows. We set up across the street from SD in a former 30's-era Ford Dealership, opening the garage doors for a fun and lively atmosphere. Performers included: Southern Culture on the Skids, The Legendary Shack Shakers, Immortal Lee Co. Killers, Pine Hill Haints, and a variety of local acts. Standard Deluxe produced posters or handbills for every show which have become a hot commodity with local collectors. Everyone mourned the WMH's passing, it is sorely missed.

April. 2002
The 2nd Annual Old 280 Boogie marked the grand opening of the High-Corner Co-Op, a variety store in downtown Waverly. Scott and Francis Peek chose a small, quaint building near the SD Shop that for the past 20 years had been the headquarters for a mule-drawn logging company. The High-Corner Co-Op not only serves as a retail outlet for Standard Deluxe T-Shirts and Posters but also for Goods and Crafts made by locals and regional artists and artisans such as pottery, paintings, photography, local food products, antiques, cards, and gifts.
